Double Pack Disc Coupling for Pumps

The Double Pack Disc Coupling is a metal flex disc coupling with two shim packs per flange, replacing the elastomer element of a jaw or spider coupling with spring steel discs. The stretched shim pack design gives true zero backlash from the first revolution, while keeping low axial and bending stiffness to protect pump and gearbox bearings. Available as UMK single pack (up to 13,367 Nm) or UMS double pack for higher torque and greater angular and axial misalignment allowance. Suitable for centrifugal and screw pump drives, high-temperature process equipment, servo positioning drives, spacer-type pump installations and high-speed compressor drives. Disc condition and bolt torque can be inspected without dismantling the drive. Custom bore, keyway, bolt pattern, spacer length and material are machined to drawing.

Double Pack Disc Coupling for Pumps — Zero Backlash Metal Flex Disc Coupling for High Torque and High Temperature

A metal flex disc coupling with two shim packs per side, replacing elastomer with spring steel discs. Built for pump drives and industrial power transmission where backlash must be zero, temperature must be tolerated and angular / axial misalignment must be absorbed without sacrificing torsional rigidity.

Max Torque Range Up to 13,367 Nm Single pack UMK / double pack UMS series
Torsional Rigidity Zero Backlash Stretched shim pack, no elastomer creep
Misalignment Angular + Axial Low axial and bending stiffness

What a Metal Flex Disc Coupling Actually Does

Replaces elastomer with spring steel — keeps flexibility, adds temperature capability

A metal flex disc coupling is a disc type coupling where several flexible metallic elements are bolted alternately to opposite flanges. Because the elastomer used in a jaw coupling or spider coupling is replaced by spring steel discs, the metal flex disc coupling keeps angular and axial misalignment capability but adds high temperature capability that no elastomer can match. The stretched shim pack design gives zero backlash — there is no rubber to compress, no spider to wear, and no hysteresis loss in the drive train.

EPT Metal Flex couplings are available up to 13,367 Nm torque with a single shim pack (UMK series) or a double shim pack (UMS series). The double pack version — the product on this page — uses two disc packs per side to raise torque capacity and increase axial and angular misalignment allowance without enlarging the coupling envelope.

Seven Reasons Buyers Select the Double Pack Version

Each point maps to a specific pump or drive-line problem

  1. High power-to-weight ratio. Steel discs carry more torque per kg than an equivalent elastomer coupling, which matters when the drive envelope is constrained by pump housing geometry.
  2. Accommodates angular and axial misalignment. The flexing disc pack absorbs shaft misalignment without transmitting bending loads to the pump or gearbox bearings.
  3. High temperature application. No elastomer means no temperature ceiling from rubber degradation. Suitable for hot pump rooms, engine-mounted drives and process equipment where ambient temperature exceeds elastomer limits.
  4. Visual inspection without dismantling equipment. Disc condition and bolt torque can be checked in place — no need to remove the pump or open the housing to inspect the flexible element.
  5. Low axial stiffness with high torsional rigidity. The disc pack is stiff in torsion (zero backlash, accurate positioning) but soft in axial and bending direction (protects bearings, absorbs thermal growth).
  6. High-speed capacity. No centrifugal restriction from elastomer mass. Balanced disc packs run at pump and motor speeds well above what elastomer couplings allow.
  7. Added advantage of stretch-fitted shim pack. The discs are pre-stretched during assembly, so the double pack disc coupling is under tension at zero torque — this removes free play before load is applied, giving true zero backlash from the first revolution.

Single Pack vs Double Pack — Which One Fits Your Drive

Both series cover the same torque range but solve different alignment problems

UMK Series

Single Shim Pack

One disc pack per flange. Lowest axial and bending stiffness, highest misalignment tolerance per unit of torque. Best for close-coupled pump drives where the shafts are already aligned and the metal flex disc coupling mainly absorbs residual misalignment and thermal growth.

UMS Series — this product

Double Shim Pack

Two disc packs per flange. Higher torque capacity in the same envelope, and greater angular and axial misalignment allowance. Best for spacer-type pump drives and longer drive trains where shaft alignment cannot be guaranteed to the same tolerance as a close-coupled arrangement.

If you are not sure which version fits, send us the pump shaft drawing, the motor shaft drawing and the spacer length. We will confirm the correct series, disc pack count and bolt pattern before you order.

Where These Couplings Are Used

Pump drives and industrial power transmission where backlash and temperature matter

Pump Drives

Centrifugal & Screw Pumps

The metal flex disc coupling connects motor to pump without transmitting vibration or bending load to the pump bearings. Zero backlash keeps flow control accurate where the pump is servo-driven.

High-Temperature Drives

Hot Process Equipment

Boiler feed, hot oil circulation, exhaust-driven pumps. The metal flex disc coupling disc pack tolerates temperatures that would destroy a jaw coupling spider in weeks.

Precision Positioning

Servo & Test Stand Drives

Zero backlash from the stretched shim pack means the driven shaft follows the motor command without a dead band. Used on test stands and positioning drives.

Long Spacer Drives

Spacer-Type Pump Installation

When the pump must be pulled back for seal change without moving the motor, a double pack disc coupling with a spacer drop-out section allows the pump to slide out without disturbing alignment.

High-Speed Drives

Compressors & Blowers

Balanced disc packs run at speeds where elastomer couplings would be limited by centrifugal mass. Suitable for gearbox input and output couplings on high-speed trains.

Retrofit & Replacement

Replacing Elastomer Couplings

Where a jaw coupling or spider coupling keeps failing from heat or from misalignment, the metal flex disc coupling is a direct upgrade. Bolt pattern and bore can be matched to the existing hubs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to what buyers ask before placing the first order

What is the difference between single pack (UMK) and double pack (UMS)?
UMK uses one disc pack per flange. UMS uses two disc packs per flange. The double pack version raises torque capacity in the same coupling envelope and increases the allowable angular and axial misalignment. UMS is typically chosen for spacer-type pump installations and longer drive trains; UMK is typically chosen for close-coupled drives with tight alignment.
How do I confirm the correct coupling size for my pump?
Send us the pump shaft drawing, motor shaft drawing, spacer length (if any), operating torque, peak torque and running speed. We cross-check the coupling size against the torque and speed, then confirm bore tolerance, keyway dimensions and bolt pattern before quoting.
Can the coupling be supplied with a spacer for pump pull-out?
Yes. For pump installations where the pump must be pulled back for seal maintenance without moving the motor, the coupling can be supplied with a drop-out spacer. The spacer length is matched to the required pull-back distance, and the disc packs remain on the pump and motor hubs.
Is a drawing-based custom coupling available, or only standard sizes?
Both. Standard sizes cover a range of bore and torque combinations. Custom couplings are machined to drawing — non-standard bolt pattern, spacer length, bore size, flange diameter, or material selection. IGS, STP, X_T, DXF, DWG, Pro/E and PDF drawings are all accepted.
What is the MOQ and lead time?
MOQ depends on whether the coupling is a standard size or a custom build. Send us your required quantity and destination port, and our sales team will confirm MOQ, unit price and production schedule in writing. Standard sizes generally ship faster than custom builds.
Can you supply the coupling under our own brand?
Yes. OEM and private-label production is available. We can apply your brand markings, nameplate and custom packaging. Laser engraving on the hubs, custom color and branded boxes are all possible. Share your branding requirement and we will confirm feasibility.
What spare parts should be stocked with the coupling?
The wearing items on a metal flex disc coupling are the shim packs and the disc pack bolts. For a fleet or a critical pump, one spare shim pack set and one spare bolt set per coupling size is recommended. These can be packed together with the coupling order to reduce freight cost.
