Choosing the Right Spider for Your Application When selecting an elastomeric spider for a jaw coupling, it is important to select one that is designed specifically for the coupling. It is also necessary to consider the operating conditions that the coupling will be subjected to, such as a large degree of torque and angular misalignment. A good starting point is to review the coupling's service factor. The higher the service factor, the greater the load or torque that the coupling must tolerate, and the more likely it is to fail. If your coupling has a service factor greater than 0.5, it is unlikely to last long or perform as efficiently as it could. In addition, the spider's material will determine its durability. Using a softer, more elastic elastomeric material means that the coupling is less likely to break under normal use. On the other hand, a harder, more resilient material can be more likely to wear out quickly and will fail sooner than a softer, more pliable elastomeric design. * Solid-center type (SC) – this type is usually preferred for applications where the shaft ends are close enough to allow for a spider thickness that exceeds the hub bore. This spider has legs that are attached around the center of the coupling by a snap wrap. When retained by a ring, it has a speed limit of 1,750 rpm; when it is retained with a collar, it achieves the same speed rating. Depending on the spider material, the coupling can be operated at a wide range of speeds. For instance, an NBR spider can run at a high speed of 3,600 rpm. On the other hand, a Hytrel or Neoprene spider can operate at slower speeds of 1,500 or less. Another consideration is whether the elastomeric material is suitable for the intended operating temperature and environment. For example, NBR can handle temperatures up to 212 F. It is also resistant to oil, hydraulic fluid and most chemicals. If the elastomeric material is not appropriate for the operating environment, it will not have the damping capability needed to prevent damage to the coupling or other components. The best way to ensure that an elastomeric spider will provide the desired damping is to discuss the operating conditions with the vendor who sells the coupling. Besides selecting the appropriate elastomeric spider material, it is also important to take into account the design of the coupling and its axial space. This will affect the coupling's performance, as well as its service life and cost. The most common types of elastomeric spiders are NBR, urethane and Hytrel. These elastomeric elements resemble natural rubber in resilience and elasticity, and they are also resistant to oil, hydraulic fluid and most chemical diluents. They are typically used for moderate to heavy shock loads. They can be made in one or two piece designs.
